What's actually in the ground
This section uses public and provider-reported data and hasn't been independently verified yet.
Taber got fibre early. In 2015 TELUS chose the town for a pilot, and the Taber Times reports it announced a $9.2 million build that would make about 90% of homes and businesses eligible, with free connection while crews were in town (Taber Times). That’s the announcement. We haven’t found a public account of how far the build actually got.
The government figures above look odd next to that: only a minority of the roads in our box report 50/10 or better, and most report none. The box takes in a lot of farmland and range road. Inside town, a fibre pilot should show up as near-complete coverage; if it doesn’t, the box or the data is wrong, and that’s one of the first things we want checked on the ground.
Topicks lists Rogers and Shaw coaxial cable in the area (Topicks), but its Taber figures cover a much wider area than the town, so we don’t quote them. In June 2024 Xplore was named in a Universal Broadband Fund announcement as investing in Taber, Barnwell, Grassy Lake and other communities; the report doesn’t say what technology that buys (Taber Times).
In our view the hard part is done here. What Taber may lack is choice on that fibre, or a short path out of town (why traffic detours).
Providers
The providers listed for Taber that we profile, Rogers, TELUS and Xplore, each run their own network. None rides on another's lines, so there are no rides-on lines to draw.
