Who can get gigabit
Fibre and cable can deliver 1 Gbps. Of the 12 government-data hexagons with 5 or more households in and around Redcliff, by what providers report in them:
| Reported in the hexagon | Hexagons |
|---|---|
| Fibre to the home reported | 5 |

What's actually in the ground
This section uses public and provider-reported data and hasn't been independently verified yet.
Redcliff sits on Medicine Hat’s doorstep, and its wired internet comes from the same two owners: TELUS on the phone side and Rogers on the cable side, the network Rogers took over from Shaw. Being next to a bigger city usually means the same network, extended.
The government figures above split roughly down the middle: about half the roads in our box report 50/10 or better, and about half report none. The box takes in farmland and highway; inside town the picture is likely better, but the official data can’t say which streets.
According to Topicks, which maps CRTC network-owner filings, TELUS fibre to the home reaches half of its Redcliff zones and cable reaches all of them (Topicks). Those are zone counts, not addresses.
VMedia advertises DSL, cable and fibre-to-the-node plans in the area (VMedia); fibre to the node ends in copper (the difference).
In 2017 Axia presented its “FibreTown” model to town council: Axia builds open fibre to homes and businesses if enough residents sign up, with 30% interest as the trigger, the Bow Island Commentator reports (Bow Island Commentator). The report records no decision, and we’ve found nothing public saying it went ahead.
In our view the opportunity is the neighbour: a network built for Medicine Hat should be planned to reach Redcliff.
Providers
VMedia sells service over TELUS and Rogers's lines (our inference: it doesn't name the network owner).
Incumbent telephone company
- TELUS The incumbent phone company. Topicks, working from CRTC network-owner filings, lists TELUS DSL across the town and fibre to the home in part of it. Source: topicks.ca
Cable company
- Rogers (formerly Shaw) The cable network, Shaw's until Rogers bought it in 2023. Topicks lists coaxial cable across all of its Redcliff zones. Source: topicks.ca
Resellers (renting someone else's lines)
- VMedia Advertises DSL, cable and fibre-to-the-node plans in the Redcliff area. Resellers like VMedia rent the incumbents' lines. Source: vmedia.ca
Fixed wireless

- Mascon Listed by Topicks as a fixed-wireless network owner. Source: topicks.ca
Infrastructure and exchanges
Alberta SuperNet fibre, built with public money for public buildings, reaches Redcliff. It was never built to reach homes (what SuperNet is).

Calgary to Brooks to Medicine Hat fibreroutedocumentedapproximate path
Bell's network map shows a major Bell fibre route between Calgary and Medicine Hat. The Alberta SuperNet map (Service Alberta, 2005/06, in Cybera's 2021 report) shows fibre on the same corridor through Brooks, along the Trans-Canada (Highway 1). In our view TELUS and Rogers (formerly Shaw) may have their own fibre here too. Drawn along the highway; the real path is not known.
-
Medicine Hat to Swift Current to Regina fibreroutedocumentedapproximate path
Bell's network map shows a major Bell fibre route east from Medicine Hat to Regina, and on to Winnipeg. In our view it runs through Swift Current along the Trans-Canada (Highway 1). Drawn along the highway; the real path is not known.
-
Alberta SuperNet base network fibreSuperNet fibrereportedapproximate path
The SuperNet's base network, fibre linking 27 larger centres, including Calgary, Brooks, Medicine Hat and Lethbridge. Bell built and owns it. SuperNet carries traffic for public buildings; it was never fibre to homes. Traced from Service Alberta's SuperNet map (2005/06, in Cybera's 2021 report); some paths have changed since.
-
Alberta SuperNet extended area fibreSuperNet fibrereportedapproximate path
The SuperNet's extended area network, fibre to about 400 smaller communities, which the province paid $193 million to build. Bell has run all of SuperNet since 2018. It reaches the Montana border at Coutts. Traced from Service Alberta's SuperNet map (2005/06, in Cybera's 2021 report); wireless links are left out, and some paths have changed since.
